whym.global have launched an interpreting app specifically for the travel industry. Designed for both leisure and business travellers, whym: Translation for Travel provides quick and easy access to telephone interpreting.

whym.global are a specialist language agency for the travel industry who provide their services via the smartphone app “whym: Translation for Travel”. Their app gives travellers anywhere in the world, at any time of day, access to a professional interpreter. They sell direct to consumer and are currently building relationships with travel providers as affiliates and resellers.

The Challenge

whym.global require their interpreting app to connect any traveller, any where in the world, to an interpreter through a single tap on their smartphone. In order to compete with machine translation apps any service they provided had to be fast and easy to use. The lenghty IVR menus and language codes normally associated with telephone interpreting services would not suffice in mobile-based services where users are accustomed to an instant response. Not only did whym.global require a telephone interpreting service, they also needed added capability to monitor every aspect of user activity such as account registrations and payment collection.

As any small-mediaum sized language agency will be aware, building a complete telephone interpreting, and interpreter, management system is frequently not an option. whym.global were ideally looking for a end-to-end solution that included a telephone interpreting platform, recruitment and management of interpreters, and flexibility of technology to enable a smooth integration with an app interface.

Our Solution

At Interpreters Portal we were in a position to offer a complete end to end solution — including our telephone interpreting platform, full interpreter management, and integration with a simple app interface. We have always prided ourselves on the flexibility of our telephone interpreting platform, which enables us to easily customise services to each of our client’s requirements. 

By far the most complex piece of whym.global’s app based service is our telephone interpreting platform that effectively runs all aspects of the service. Integrating with the app interface and the app stores — our platform collects all registrations and payments, drives the telephone based service that connects the traveller to an online interpreter, logs all calls, monitors online interpreters and enables us to provide detailed reports on all activity on the service from any angle. We are able to provide whym.global with extensive records of all registrations, minutes purchased, any calls made through the service and user activity. 

 Our ability to customise and restrict our standard service IVR selection menu was central to the success in speed of connection between a traveller and interpreter. All a caller hears on making a call is their account balance and confirmation of their language choice. Using caller number recognition we are able to verify any caller on the basis of their registered mobile number. As soon as a traveller selects their required language in the app our system checks how much money is on the account and then locates an online interpreter in the required language — all within a minute. And, crucially, without any additional data input by the caller. 

With the design of the app expertly completed by Netguru, we’ve been able to deliver a interface that appears eminently simple to the traveller, while most of the sophisticated system technology is hidden from view.
